Bad News for Pipelines – Good News for Rail

One of the first oil pipelines originated in the 1860s, when the Oil Transport Association constructed a wrought iron pipeline from an oil field in Pennsylvania to a railroad station 6 miles away. The pipeline was only 2 inches in diameter. Pipelines are generally more economical than shipping by railroad. But they have more regulatory hurdles.
